[00:00:00] Josh Janssen: [00:00:00] Happy Sunday, screenplay Sunday, GB is joining us once again. Good IJ Bay.
[00:00:16] George Martin: [00:00:16] Uh, get adjusted and get, Hey everyone. How are you
[00:00:19] Josh Janssen: [00:00:19] with a special guest Simon Taylor.
[00:00:21] Simon Taylor: [00:00:21] Now that that's stuck footage at the stop,
[00:00:26] Josh Janssen: [00:00:26] you can thank GB for that.
[00:00:28] Simon Taylor: [00:00:28] Well, all the budget went.
[00:00:31] Josh Janssen: [00:00:31] Yes. I wasn't even stock footage. I believe it is a, um, a photograph that has a slight Ken burns effect.
[00:00:39] Simon Taylor: [00:00:39] That's real budget.
[00:00:41] Josh Janssen: [00:00:41] Uh, Simon, uh, thank you for, uh, for being on screenplay Sunday for the first time, you've obviously been on the daily talk show, uh, before, uh, have you ever been in a table read before?
[00:00:56] Simon Taylor: [00:00:56] No, I don't think so. I did some plays in high school, but [00:01:00] I was always. Yeah. I was always like some random character that maybe has one line.
[00:01:06] So this is a big moment for me is what I'm saying. Okay, great.
[00:01:09] Josh Janssen: [00:01:09] Great. The writer's room.
[00:01:12] Simon Taylor: [00:01:12] I don't know my role yet. So
[00:01:16] line guy. Yes.
[00:01:17] Josh Janssen: [00:01:17] You will be surprised. I mean, the raw you've been in the writer's room before. What can you give us some. Uh, idea of what a writer's room is like, because we, we obviously do writing, but we've never done it in a room.
[00:01:31] Simon Taylor: [00:01:31] Before. Well, I've had three different rooms, experiences, one with Jay Leno that was just send jokes directly to Jay.
[00:01:40] So when no one ever discussed it, I just, you know, sit in my bedroom, Raven news, write the joke, send it to Jay. And if he liked it, he used it. So that was pretty straightforward. Uh, for Sean McAuliffe, it was a room. Of maybe six of us and we're all at our laptops. And all we ever really discussed was who wanted a cup of tea.
[00:01:58] So [00:02:00] we, we occasionally would say, We occasionally discuss like legislation or we discuss like the details of something, but we'd never really throw ideas around. We'd write our own script and then hand it to Shawn. And then the last one was for Netflix magic for humans on Netflix. And. That was a, that was a writer's room.
[00:02:24] Like you see in like 30 rock and whatnot, like donuts on the table, um, you know, soda, water and people pitching things. And I hated that because the really like verbose aggressive. Speak as would like you have to fight for your ideas. So it wasn't enough to have a good idea. You had to be louder than the other dudes.
[00:02:46] So those are the three. Those are the three models you can work with.
[00:02:51] George Martin: [00:02:51] Is there that many ideas going on in one of those rooms? Cause like, I can't imagine it being like eight hours of like shouting or is it, or is there a lot of like silence? So just like that, I'm [00:03:00] still good. Nothing.
[00:03:00] Simon Taylor: [00:03:00] Yeah. In the last one.
[00:03:02] Yeah. I mean, you got to come and people are riffing off each other. So someone will say like, Hey, for Halloween, why don't we do like a zombie thing and someone to go vampire is a more popular, let's do vampires. And they're going, no, I think zombies are vampires because, and so you will have that for three hours.
[00:03:20] And then we never do that segment. Like that'll yeah. It kind of plays
[00:03:24] Josh Janssen: [00:03:24] out like that. Wow. And so, uh, well grace has been, uh, the head of the, the writers room today and there was no one else in there. So she's written the whole thing.
[00:03:36] Grace Peris: [00:03:36] There was one other person
[00:03:38] Josh Janssen: [00:03:38] did, did sibs. How did mr. 97 help?
[00:03:42] Grace Peris: [00:03:42] He didn't Oh, a little bit, but I was just throwing ideas at him and he was like, yeah.
[00:03:47] Josh Janssen: [00:03:47] yeah,
[00:03:49] Grace Peris: [00:03:49] not really
[00:03:49] Josh Janssen: [00:03:49] helping. So yeah. Mason, isn't the sort of the ideas go.
[00:03:56] Simon Taylor: [00:03:56] That's cool.
[00:03:59] Grace Peris: [00:03:59] I would [00:04:00] say ideas and then he wouldn't laugh. I was like, okay, well that's not funny.
[00:04:05] Josh Janssen: [00:04:05] Well, Mason, uh, is, uh, the producer on a one trick, Tony. Uh, Mason, can you say your, the thing that you were talking when it comes to comedy, uh, Simon, Mason doesn't really know that much about comedy, but you had a very strong opinion.
[00:04:22] You had a very strong opinion about someone who you thought wasn't funny. Who did you, who was it that you don't think is funny? Nice Adam Sandberg, not funny,
[00:04:32] Simon Taylor: [00:04:32] Andy.
[00:04:52] Josh Janssen: [00:04:52] so, yeah,
[00:04:55] Simon Taylor: [00:04:55] in 10 years time where they like nerd bodies and do like a, [00:05:00] a CZI version that's out, like
[00:05:04] Josh Janssen: [00:05:04] Andy says comedy.
[00:05:07] Simon Taylor: [00:05:07] Yeah. I, I, he has a very particular kind of bro. We stole a comedy like, you know, and he's not so much a punchline dude. He's more just like a personality. So if you don't like his personality, then you don't like it it's comedy.
[00:05:21] But, uh, there are other, other comics who are actually writing have like clearly written punchlines that, you know, a lot more people are laughing. Yeah. So Andy Sandberg. Yeah, but he was in a good movie though called Palm Springs recently. That was really good. So maybe watch that film, maybe watch that film.
[00:05:38] That was pretty enjoyable.
[00:05:39] Josh Janssen: [00:05:39] Yeah. Yeah. Brooklyn nine nine is just not doing it for me. Not funny.
[00:05:44] Simon Taylor: [00:05:44] The crime's not severe enough. Like everything I lighthearted, they, they never come in and goes, there's a serial killer on the loose. Like it's just like some guy stole a pastrami sandwich,
[00:05:58] Josh Janssen: [00:05:58] the [00:06:00] NCI. So like there's other shows that are probably more suited to what you're after Simon.
[00:06:05] Simon Taylor: [00:06:05] Yeah, but not with a Jake Peralta comedy, not with that. Adam Sandberg champagne.
[00:06:13] Josh Janssen: [00:06:13] Uh, Mason, do you think that, uh, UAA, um, uh, what were the two versions? Simon? You can either be a lines guy or you can be a, you can be a punchline guy or a. What was the other one? Personality, personality, definitely a lines guy.
[00:06:31] I love a good punchline. Yeah. Okay.
[00:06:35] Simon Taylor: [00:06:35] That's probably more of a character because he doesn't necessarily have punchlines in, but he just does ridiculous things and he says things in like very nice. Isn't a punchline, but the way he says it, it's hilarious. So that's an, that's an example of a personality guy.
[00:06:51] Josh Janssen: [00:06:51] great. Well, so
[00:06:52] George Martin: [00:06:52] I was running through some of the, um, I got the. The Seinfeld book the other day is all
[00:06:58] Simon Taylor: [00:06:58] jokes.
[00:07:00] [00:07:00] George Martin: [00:07:00] And I was just running through a few of them with, with the housemates and it wasn't translating well for me.
[00:07:09] Nah, just did my own voice
[00:07:13] Simon Taylor: [00:07:13] with a voice.
[00:07:15] Josh Janssen: [00:07:15] Can you read while GB? I really wasn't. It's terrible to say the wrong words. I mean, I feel like I would absolutely butcher that. Uh, yeah. Uh, Simon. So the way screenplay Sunday works is obviously, uh, one of us writes a script today it's grace and we all have a role to play.
[00:07:37] We needed to bring some more industry, uh, sort of thought into the piece. And so GB comes up with an interesting industry fact, uh, GB what's today's industry fact.
[00:07:50] George Martin: [00:07:50] So the good facts today, uh, on this day in 1997, Titanic premiered
[00:08:00] [00:08:00] Josh Janssen: [00:08:00] the film,
[00:08:02] George Martin: [00:08:02] the film, and got a couple of other ones. Uh, We, I like to go through a divorce of interest. So Martin Scorsese divorces Isabella Rosellini after three years of marriage in 1992. That's a good one. Yeah, that's another. And another divorce of interest. Charlie, Shane divorced. Uh, potentially
[00:08:27] Josh Janssen: [00:08:27] that the, this is the date that it was filed.
[00:08:32] George Martin: [00:08:32] Good question. Yeah, I guess so.
[00:08:38] Josh Janssen: [00:08:38] It's probably like the actual, like the
[00:08:40] Simon Taylor: [00:08:40] finalize it's
[00:08:41] Josh Janssen: [00:08:41] yeah. I don't know the specifics of it because you have to be separated for first GB
[00:08:48] George Martin: [00:08:48] look. Sure.
[00:08:49] Josh Janssen: [00:08:49] Sky GB. Yeah.
[00:08:52] Simon Taylor: [00:08:52] I think there's different laws in different States. So GB, what state specifically, can you recite
[00:08:56] Josh Janssen: [00:08:56] the law? So
[00:08:58] George Martin: [00:08:58] many questions, too many questions.
[00:09:00] [00:09:00] Charlie, Shane divorced Brooke Mueller on this day, uh, after it. Irreconcilable differences, how
[00:09:08] Josh Janssen: [00:09:08] you should write some jokes.
[00:09:11] George Martin: [00:09:11] Sorry. That was, I thought these are my best facts. One more fact, uh, happy birthday to Toni Collette
[00:09:20] Jess Lucas: [00:09:20] them this this week. George. So thank you for, um, coming to us. We're grateful that we know.
[00:09:26] Simon Taylor: [00:09:26] Thank you. Thank you.
[00:09:29] Josh Janssen: [00:09:29] That was really good. Uh, good work. J B can we find out for next
[00:09:32] George Martin: [00:09:32] week? Hands are sweaty,
[00:09:36] Josh Janssen: [00:09:36] heavy, good Eminem reference. Uh, GB, can we, um, uh, next week, can you find out about that divorce stuff? Cause I am interested.
[00:09:45] George Martin: [00:09:45] Is it a specific web? So what do you want to know?
[00:09:47] Josh Janssen: [00:09:47] I just want to know, like, because your, the idea was that it was connected to.
[00:09:54] The day that we're recording. Yeah. Has it got like a bunch of dates next to the divorces? Is [00:10:00] that what you're doing?
[00:10:01] George Martin: [00:10:01] No. No. So I just type in a date. So this date was November one and it just comes up with like birthdays weddings, film
[00:10:10] Josh Janssen: [00:10:10] premiers. It's also 97 as well. That's very true.
[00:10:16] George Martin: [00:10:16] She'll lead with that.
[00:10:22] Josh Janssen: [00:10:22] balloon. Wasn't enough.
[00:10:25] George Martin: [00:10:25] Yeah, it is my son's birthday today.
[00:10:28] Josh Janssen: [00:10:28] And so now what we do is we have the assignment. Have you got the script in front of you? And can you say it? Yep. Perfect. And so, uh, what we do is grace, can you tell us the title of the script and then Simon, we'll get you to guess what the premise is.
[00:10:46] Simon Taylor: [00:10:46] Oh, okay. So
[00:10:48] Grace Peris: [00:10:48] today's script is called the fiery fans,
[00:10:52] Josh Janssen: [00:10:52] right? Okay, this is going to be very hard for you Simon, because you haven't heard any of the other scripts [00:11:00] and we don't do sort of recaps.
[00:11:03] Simon Taylor: [00:11:03] So this is
[00:11:04] Josh Janssen: [00:11:04] yes.
[00:11:06] Simon Taylor: [00:11:06] So, uh, so this is a long running series, like the same characters.
[00:11:09] Josh Janssen: [00:11:09] Good question, JB. Yeah.
[00:11:11] George Martin: [00:11:11] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:11:12] Look it is
[00:11:13] Josh Janssen: [00:11:13] these Ray capsules. George, did we just do
[00:11:16] Simon Taylor: [00:11:16] one same fully confident in the answer? Like yeah, look at it.
[00:11:23] George Martin: [00:11:23] The original idea was that at the end of this series, we'd have a feature film. Uh, is it, it's a continuation on
[00:11:31] Simon Taylor: [00:11:31] data?
[00:11:33] Josh Janssen: [00:11:33] But we only have three more episodes before the end of the season.
[00:11:38] Simon Taylor: [00:11:38] Yeah.
[00:11:40] George Martin: [00:11:40] Real short. What should we give him a recap?
[00:11:44] Simon Taylor: [00:11:44] Well, I do, I have to guess what party fans,
[00:11:49] Hari fan. I don't think it's like fan is in like, uh, you know, the machine fan. I think it's like fan like a group, like a groupie or like a, um, like, like. I [00:12:00] know, like boy band type fan, like so far he fans like angry, angry fans. Maybe it's about cancel culture or something, but something fat like fandom.
[00:12:09] George Martin: [00:12:09] I like angry,
[00:12:11] Simon Taylor: [00:12:11] angry, angry, angry fans of something.
[00:12:14] Josh Janssen: [00:12:14] Okay. All right. Well, uh, we'll get straight into it. Uh, grace, can you let us know who's playing who and who's reading the big printer
[00:12:23] Grace Peris: [00:12:23] sure thing. So, uh, Jess, you're playing Alex. Simon your, you were playing Archie. George you're playing Mark. Josh, your Bob and the announcer.
[00:12:37] And you're also big print.
[00:12:40] Josh Janssen: [00:12:40] This is funny job. Josh has got, Josh has got three and his accounts. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. This is too much.
[00:12:48] Grace Peris: [00:12:48] Denounce only has one lots. Don't worry. Dad. Mason, you're Dale and I'm Wendy.
[00:12:54] Josh Janssen: [00:12:54] Um, did you use any big words? No big w
[00:12:57] Grace Peris: [00:12:57] I think you're, I think, I think I avoided [00:13:00] big words today, Josh.
[00:13:01] Josh Janssen: [00:13:01] Hey, Josh. Just
[00:13:05] real good. Yeah. So I'm Bob bouncer and big print. Yes. What is it?
[00:13:14] Grace Peris: [00:13:14] Mason stale.
[00:13:15] Jess Lucas: [00:13:15] Oh, hi.
[00:13:17] Grace Peris: [00:13:17] Dayla Wendy is still there. Um,
[00:13:20] Josh Janssen: [00:13:20] yeah, we nearly lost the main character. All right. So here we go. I'm reading the big print. Uh, gross. You've got your, your personal email address on the right that
[00:13:34] George Martin: [00:13:34] break that out.
[00:13:34] Josh Janssen: [00:13:34] But, um, so here we go.
[00:13:36] Thanks. Surprise, surprise, surprise. She didn't put our address on there as well. We can put it, we can give you an alias email. So we'll, we'll set that up. Uh, the fiery fans written by grace Paris PO box 400 Abbotsford Victoria, three zero six seven, grace. It big media company.com interior. Bob's banter barber shop [00:14:00] 2020 AFL grand final
[00:14:01] Simon Taylor: [00:14:01] day,
[00:14:02] Josh Janssen: [00:14:02] Dale and Archie, uh, sitting next to each other, getting their haircut.
[00:14:10] Archie he's wearing his Jalong. Just let me be. My mouth is dry. Archie is wearing his Jalong Katz gear. Dale's Baba. Alex is wearing her Richmond tigers. Top hat and scarf
[00:14:29] Simon Taylor: [00:14:29] dial night. I'm pumped for the footie today. The cats I've done it. Bring it home. Not only for us fans, but for the little bald man who is retiring today.
[00:14:41] Bob hoodie, you got four.
[00:14:43] Josh Janssen: [00:14:43] Bob is looking serious and stern. I do not follow the football. Look. You're a shoot guy. Please just let me focus on your hair to dial
[00:14:57] Simon Taylor: [00:14:57] so much for
[00:14:58] Josh Janssen: [00:14:58] Ben to Baba.
[00:15:01] [00:15:00] Jess Lucas: [00:15:01] Tigers are going for three and four years. We've got this in the bag. Dusty's on form. The whole team is on form. Actually a colleague of mine hosts an annual grand final party.
[00:15:11] So I'm glad the game is at night this year, so we can get a full day's work in before the celebrations.
[00:15:17] Josh Janssen: [00:15:17] I'm off to the in-laws after this, they hold an annual party as well, but I just can't get into the game. Archie starts to look agitated in Berlin. The tigers have had their day.
[00:15:29] Simon Taylor: [00:15:29] Dusty is overrated, and if he wins the norm Smith, this haircut will be for nothing.
[00:15:33] Cause I'll be shaving.
[00:15:34] Josh Janssen: [00:15:34] My bloody head. Alex looks confusingly and Archie Dale also looks confused.
[00:15:43] Jess Lucas: [00:15:43] How is dusty overrated. He finished fourth in the Brown lorry and received more votes than any cats players, mate, you just need to relax
[00:15:51] Josh Janssen: [00:15:51] luck. No,
[00:15:53] Simon Taylor: [00:15:53] I'm pissed off that. It's not even in Victoria this year.
[00:16:00] [00:15:59] Josh Janssen: [00:15:59] fair rugby state don't eat.
[00:16:02] Simon Taylor: [00:16:02] They don't even watch football. I'm done with 2020 and I'm sick to
[00:16:08] Josh Janssen: [00:16:08] death. Um, to
[00:16:10] Simon Taylor: [00:16:10] fence,
[00:16:12] Jess Lucas: [00:16:12] I'm sorry. This reaction is unacceptable. I think you need to calm down.
[00:16:17] Josh Janssen: [00:16:17] Bob puts his scissors down, out outer of my barber shop now, but only half our heads have been cut. You can't kick us out now.
[00:16:31] It's Bob's. Ban tip barber shop. I am Bob and therefore I can do what I want wherever, wherever this is. It is the opposite, whatever this is, I should say. It is the opposite of banter and you will not treat my staff like this. Archie storms out of the barber. Dale pays for both haircuts. Sorry, sorry. I have a great day.
[00:16:59] Go for [00:17:00] tigers.
[00:17:01] Jess Lucas: [00:17:01] Thanks, Bob. I appreciate that. Some people, Hey,
[00:17:05] Josh Janssen: [00:17:05] it was meant to be a solid Bob, but I really need to change that sign interior Wendy's parents house early evening, Wendy and her father Mark, uh, preparing the lounge room with the snacks and drinks, honey. Everything is almost ready. What time is Del coming over?
[00:17:28] Grace Peris: [00:17:28] Uh, he should be over at any minute. Now he went with Archie to get a haircut and said they would stop off at the shops to get some snacks. I also think Samantha said, she'll be over during the second half she's with Gerald's family now. And we'll probably probably bring some hot dogs
[00:17:44] George Martin: [00:17:44] cause elastic, Samantha, I cannot wait to catch up with her and Gerald.
[00:17:49] Josh Janssen: [00:17:49] There was a knock at the front door. Alex has used makeup to make her face look like a tiger. Alex.
[00:17:58] George Martin: [00:17:58] You're the first one here. [00:18:00] Wow. That makeup is great. Almost looks like a Halloween
[00:18:03] Josh Janssen: [00:18:03] costume.
[00:18:06] Jess Lucas: [00:18:06] Oh, hi Mark.
[00:18:13] Let me tell you, I thought I would add to the atmosphere and follow Gemma. Watson's tiger. Makeup tutorial.
[00:18:22] Josh Janssen: [00:18:22] Who
[00:18:22] George Martin: [00:18:22] the bloody hell is that that's not Parallon. I was going to dress as myself for Halloween because you know, my life is pretty scary.
[00:18:30] Josh Janssen: [00:18:30] Wendy winters at the awful joke.
[00:18:36] George Martin: [00:18:36] Yeah, Wendy, this is Alex.
[00:18:39] Josh Janssen: [00:18:39] She does some
[00:18:39] George Martin: [00:18:39] freelance consulting work at the company.
[00:18:42] She is brilliant. You should chat to her for you, but business.
[00:18:46] Grace Peris: [00:18:46] Hi, Alex. Wow, you great. Let's go grab a drink.
[00:18:50] Josh Janssen: [00:18:50] Wendy and Alex walked to the dining room. The front door opens and Dale and Archie walk in
[00:18:58] Simon Taylor: [00:18:58] you, ah, [00:19:00] Jalong, the greatest team of all
[00:19:03] Josh Janssen: [00:19:03] Dale,
[00:19:03] George Martin: [00:19:03] Archie. How are you? The haircuts are looking. Interesting.
[00:19:09] Josh Janssen: [00:19:09] Oh, hi Mark.
[00:19:12] It's been an interesting morning. Archie's love for the cats. Got him in some hot water this morning.
[00:19:18] Simon Taylor: [00:19:18] Look, I'm a passionate guy. This Baba though. She was equally as passionate. I was just for another tape.
[00:19:27] Josh Janssen: [00:19:27] I'll notice as Alex and Wendy and the dining room behind Archie, Dale puts his hand in his head on no.
[00:19:37] Simon Taylor: [00:19:37] Oh, what
[00:19:38] Josh Janssen: [00:19:38] Alex and Winky walked into the lounge room. Alex, look shocked.
[00:19:44] Jess Lucas: [00:19:44] Really? You're here.
[00:19:46] Josh Janssen: [00:19:46] Wendy looks at Dale with a confused look. What
[00:19:50] Grace Peris: [00:19:50] what's going on. Dyo honey, the hair looks uneven.
[00:19:56] Josh Janssen: [00:19:56] Um, meanwhile, there was a little [00:20:00] altercation at the park this morning.
[00:20:02] Jess Lucas: [00:20:02] Uh, and this guy basically went off at me about how much he loves the cats.
[00:20:07] Wouldn't agree to disagree. Bob had to throw him
[00:20:09] Josh Janssen: [00:20:09] out.
[00:20:11] Simon Taylor: [00:20:11] You a mailing off
[00:20:12] Josh Janssen: [00:20:12] about the cats. Tommy Hawkins is a legend.
[00:20:17] Jess Lucas: [00:20:17] No, I wasn't. I am not denying the talent, but let's just be adults about it.
[00:20:22] Josh Janssen: [00:20:22] Mark steps in between Alex and Archie. This is my house and I will not stand for this Archie
[00:20:31] George Martin: [00:20:31] sort yourself out and act like an adult.
[00:20:34] Alex don't fall for his BS and
[00:20:37] Josh Janssen: [00:20:37] Dale Mark pauses and looks around.
[00:20:41] George Martin: [00:20:41] Can someone please sort out that hair
[00:20:44] Josh Janssen: [00:20:44] Archie looks stand and walks into the kitchen. Dale gives Wendy a confused look,
[00:20:49] Grace Peris: [00:20:49] Alex, are you okay? Can you just go, please make sure Archie is okay.
[00:20:54] Jess Lucas: [00:20:54] I just don't understand these people who can't just agree to disagree.
[00:20:59] Josh Janssen: [00:20:59] I [00:21:00] mean, I th I think it's all the adrenaline being allowed out and it's now getting to watch Joe Archie just a little bit excited, but probably not dealing with it in the best way. Alex walks into the kitchen to speak to Archie, cut to kitchen.
[00:21:14] Jess Lucas: [00:21:14] I think we need to sort this out. A rivalry is good. It's healthy.
[00:21:17] Mark has been so generous, so let's just put this to bed for his sake.
[00:21:24] Simon Taylor: [00:21:24] Well, I agree.
[00:21:25] Josh Janssen: [00:21:25] I'm sorry. It's been
[00:21:27] Simon Taylor: [00:21:27] a while since I had any. Um,
[00:21:34] Jess Lucas: [00:21:34] and so will you stand by your words and shave your head? If dusty wins the nom Smith?
[00:21:40] Simon Taylor: [00:21:40] I will. And you can do the honest
[00:21:43] Josh Janssen: [00:21:43] cut to lounge room
[00:21:45] Grace Peris: [00:21:45] Dale. I'm really worried about Archie. The hotheaded behavior is so unlike him.
[00:21:51] Josh Janssen: [00:21:51] I know, I know let's just get through today and we can talk about them tomorrow. It's been a tough time for everyone, Alex and Archie walked back into the lounge [00:22:00] room.
[00:22:00] The game is about to start
[00:22:03] Simon Taylor: [00:22:03] may the best team win.
[00:22:05] Jess Lucas: [00:22:05] I look forward to getting the raises out
[00:22:10] Josh Janssen: [00:22:10] into the game.
[00:22:12] Jess Lucas: [00:22:12] Yeah.
[00:22:14] Josh Janssen: [00:22:14] And the norm Smith metal goes to Dustin Martin. Alex turns the riser on Archie looks worried.
[00:22:26] George Martin: [00:22:26] Football was the real winner today.
[00:22:29] Josh Janssen: [00:22:29] Fade to black
[00:22:37] Oh, hi.
[00:22:41] That is a reference from the, is it the room? The room room. It's a, it's a great film, Jess. You haven't seen it. Have you? You've got to say it. It's very, uh,
[00:22:51] Simon Taylor: [00:22:51] just
[00:22:52] Josh Janssen: [00:22:52] what's the Highmark bit on
[00:22:54] Grace Peris: [00:22:54] you. I Highmark so many times, so I'd bring it in there
[00:22:59] Simon Taylor: [00:22:59] watching [00:23:00] the James Franco movie on it is pretty it's like behind the scenes of made.
[00:23:05] Yeah. So it's all in. That is really funny. That's real. That's true.
[00:23:09] Josh Janssen: [00:23:09] No. What you said actually about is it behind the scenes, as in, as it was being produced or after the fact.
[00:23:16] Simon Taylor: [00:23:16] Like, is it? No, it's hot. It's uh, it's like, uh, a dramatization of it. So it's it's, you know? Yeah. So James Franco dresses up as the main characters, Tommy wiser.
[00:23:28] George Martin: [00:23:28] Well, and he's brought us in it as well.
[00:23:31] Josh Janssen: [00:23:31] Chris, I think he did a great job. That was
[00:23:33] Simon Taylor: [00:23:33] great.
[00:23:36] Josh Janssen: [00:23:36] Again, hands are also sweating. Jamie,
[00:23:40] Simon Taylor: [00:23:40] did we do it justice? Did any, can we get performance reviews now, one at a time?
[00:23:46] Grace Peris: [00:23:46] I think everyone did actually really did really well, to be honest. Um, George honorable mentioned for the accent.
[00:23:54] George Martin: [00:23:54] I wasn't confident
[00:23:55] Simon Taylor: [00:23:55] I loved it.
[00:23:58] Josh Janssen: [00:23:58] The yelling . [00:24:00] Okay. And
[00:24:01] Grace Peris: [00:24:01] then I liked the, the rail blockiness that you brought Simon to Archie
[00:24:06] Simon Taylor: [00:24:06] natural
[00:24:10] Grace Peris: [00:24:10] footy vibe. Yeah.
[00:24:11] Josh Janssen: [00:24:11] Your footy guy. Um, uh, Simon, how much planning goes into your comedy shows? You've got the fringe festival show coming up. What's what's what's involved.
[00:24:24] Simon Taylor: [00:24:24] Uh, you put tickets on sale and you hope you don't get bad reviews. No, I you, okay. This is interesting. Cause usually you set a show and then I'll do a bunch of gigs every night in the lead up to try and material.
[00:24:41] Cause we'd stand up at least your, you know you say Joe, it's basically what grace did you say? Joke. If it doesn't get a laugh, you get rid of that one and then you're basically culling your way into a good show. So you might right. I dunno, uh, um, three hours worth of jokes and you cut it down to the best [00:25:00] 50 minutes, but I haven't had a chance to do that.
[00:25:02] So this year is going to be very, let's say experimental, uh, because. I would just have to ride a lot of it at home and try it on my partner. And I'll, maybe I could try it on, on your partner, grace, man, he sells like really ruthless
[00:25:21] so, uh, yeah, usually I do a new show every year, but uh, yeah, I had to come up with a new style a bit positive this year.
[00:25:28] Josh Janssen: [00:25:28] And um, so it's virtual. Does that mean you're going to hear people laughing?
[00:25:35] Simon Taylor: [00:25:35] I'd like to get some feedback. Yeah. But I'll, I'll, I'll do it more like a TV show just because I'll have more like, uh, if you can't hear laughter cause sometimes laughter it helps with timing.
[00:25:47] So you hear a laugh and then, you know, the next, the timing for the next joke or timing for the punchline. So on TV, what they do is they have sound pews, uh, to compensate for that. So if you can have a sound cue or a video cue or a [00:26:00] visual thing, Uh, like that amazing title, like that was like poor. That was set the tone for hilarity.
[00:26:06] So I'm using a different toolkit to try and make a show this year. Yeah.
[00:26:13] Josh Janssen: [00:26:13] And so it's actually the Melbourne fringe festival. Is it Andy?
[00:26:18] Simon Taylor: [00:26:18] Yeah. Melbourne fringe festival at broadcast live from trade hall.
[00:26:22] Josh Janssen: [00:26:22] Oh great. And so, so it will be, so you will be there doing it live and then people can get tickets to watch it virtually.
[00:26:30] Yeah. Yeah. Okay, great. Oh, very cool.
[00:26:33] Simon Taylor: [00:26:33] Um, you feel, uh, just in case it's
[00:26:38] Josh Janssen: [00:26:38] GPS always feeling tight, if you will.
[00:26:46] George Martin: [00:26:46] So you're saying that you'll get cues on stage, like when you're telling the jokes. Because you won't be able to hear the audience laughing. Is that what you say?
[00:26:53] Simon Taylor: [00:26:53] Yeah, I think I might be over to have some of the audience. I have a headset, so I [00:27:00] might be able to hear some of them, but there'll be a delay.
[00:27:02] So I'd rather just have like a tight show with like, you know, if I finished a segment, there's a music queue or something like that, I've just got to use a different set of tools like, like TV does. So it's not the simulator. Like. Uh, no funniest home videos uses silly sounds. So I'm basically doing
[00:27:20] Josh Janssen: [00:27:20] that.
[00:27:21] Have you been watching any of the, uh, the late night talk shows? What have you noticed about them all being remote?
[00:27:28] Simon Taylor: [00:27:28] Something nice about, um, Saying into their lives and the personality. And I just liked that celebrities look pretty normal. Like they don't have anything on us. Like you said, into the house and you go, that's their house.
[00:27:42] That's a Kramer clock. Like why I quite like that. So if the per if the actual celebrity or that the host is an endearing person, then. I think it worked out for them, but if they rely [00:28:00] on the fanfare of the production to make them look good, that was apparent too. So there are some celebrities I like more now.
[00:28:07] And there's some celebrities I'm like you, uh, you're you're old, you're old showbiz. You're not like a genuine, you know, uh, uh, entertainer
[00:28:16] Josh Janssen: [00:28:16] who did it best. Do you think? I like
[00:28:19] Simon Taylor: [00:28:19] felons. I thought Fallon's family was super cute. I like, um, Cole bears. Um, Yeah, there's a couple who struggled. Uh, I think just cause they're like Uber rich and they they're in their like fancy house and they're just, well, all of them, but yeah.
[00:28:35] I dunno. Some have been rich a bit too long. The old ones. Yeah.
[00:28:39] Josh Janssen: [00:28:39] Hmm. Awesome. Well, uh, it's screenplay Sunday, grace. Great job. Uh, once again. And so this is episode seven. So we're planning on getting to episode 10 before we will have some form of finale, uh, which, uh, it's, you know, it's all coming together. I can see the narrative.
[00:28:58] I can see how it's all playing [00:29:00] out at all. Makes perfect sense.
[00:29:04] Simon Taylor: [00:29:04] What's going to happen with Archie's hair by next episode, is it a Whitney? Does he turn to wigs? Is it a wig shopping scene?
[00:29:13] Josh Janssen: [00:29:13] Could be, don't give too many ideas. Wait,
[00:29:18] thank you, Simon, for coming on the podcast.
[00:29:20] Simon Taylor: [00:29:20] Thanks for having me. This was super fun. I love this.
[00:29:23] Josh Janssen: [00:29:23] Well, uh, grab a sandwich because otherwise, uh, they will go to waste. There's a really nice one. There's a tuner and salad one, which I would really recommend, um, and feel free to take also the cans of drink as well.
[00:29:35] Cause I don't wanna have to carry them back to the car otherwise, uh, enjoy your Sunday, everyone. A happy birthday, mr. 97. Uh, thank you, Simon. Make sure you get tickets. Where can people get tickets to, uh, the fringe side?
[00:29:47] Simon Taylor: [00:29:47] Uh, you can go Melbourne, fringe.com that AEU and uh, yeah, look up my show. Simon Taylor.
[00:29:52] Why is grandma racist?
[00:29:56] Josh Janssen: [00:29:56] That's a really good question that you guys, everyone.
